Bruce Chatwin was born in Sheffield in 1940. After attending Marlborough School he began work as a porter at Sotheby's. Eight years later, having become one of Sotheby's youngest directors, he abandoned his job to pursue his passion for world travel. Between 1972 and 1975 he worked for the Sunday Times, before announcing his next departure in a telegram: 'Gone to Patagonia for six months.' This trip inspired the first of Chatwin's books, In Patagonia, which won the Hawthornden Prize and the E.M. Forster Award and launched his writing career. Two of his books have been made into feature films: The Viceroy of Ouidah (retitled Cobra Verde), directed by Werner Herzog, and Andrew Grieve's On the Black Hill. On publication The Songlines went straight to Number 1 in the Sunday Times bestseller list and remained in the top ten for nine months. On the Black Hill won the Whitbread First Novel Award while his novel Utz was nominated for the 1988 Booker Prize. He died in January 1989, aged forty-eight.

Chatwin was the best travel adventurist of his time, I loved the book when it was new, and it lost nothing of its impact and relevance today! If you want to go and explore the world, make sure you bring this book along. And a moleskine of course.

This is a wonderful collection of tall tales, fiction, fact and bizarre anecdotes, loosely connected by their association with a sparsely populated part of South America. Unfortunately critics and publishers in their obsessive need to categorise books, called it a Travel Book. This was misleading, as are the claims that he reinvented travel writing or had some sort of unique insight into Patagonia, its people, history and landscape. Chatwin was primarily a storyteller, not a travel writer or an expert on Southern Argentina. His talent for the 5-6 page yarn is unparalleled in modern literature and this is as good as anything he wrote.

Being Patagonia a huge extension of land, everyone expects that it's a vast and complex subject to write about. Reading this book made me feel that, in a certain moment, there'd be a shocking experience or kind of "revelation" for the author. But, as the chapters ran, I got somewhat frustrated and felt that, despiting his skills as a writer, Bruce didn't really try to deepen himself on the mysteries of the region, remaining in the surface of some sparses topics, like go in search of Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid's steps there, sheep raisers, etc... Anyway, it still had a story good enough to encourage me to take my car and drive some 7.500 Km from home and know Patagonia. I expect to write a further review after completing this trip (mid-March).

While an interesting read, with good research, and a cast of characters who help move the book along, I was disappointed with the ending which just trailed off. It was as though he became bored with the subject. There was no revelation, no feeling that the journey had taught him anything, and no distillation of this great expanse land. I never even knew what he thought about Patagonia by the end of his journey, or if his journey had changed his perceptions. Nevertheless, for someone who is about to live in BA for three years it was a pleasant primer.

As a young boy Chatwin is fascinated by a piece of skin of a long excint animal in the house of his grandmother. He decides to go searching for something like that in Patagonia. This book consists of about 100 very small chapters in which Chatwin combines the tale of his own adventure with the tales of travellers long before him. It reads like a collection of short stories what might be the reason I like this book less than the travelbooks of Thesiger, Theroux, Thubron or Murphy, to name a few.

IN PATAGONIA is, simply put, two hundred pages of crisp, elegant, and enjoyable prose. This is a rare thing. This book is not a travel guide a la Fodor's nor is it a piece of journalism. Some of the reviewers below hold this against Mr. Chatwin. I suspect most potential readers will not.

Mir gefällt die Geschichte sehr gut, da heute immer noch "vom Ernst des Lebens" gesprochen wird, wenn Kinder in die Schule kommen. Das passt für mich aber nicht zum Empfinden der Kinder, die sich meistens sehr auf die Schule freuen. Dieses Buch greift das Thema sehr humorvoll auf. Auf der Suche nach dem Ernst des Lebens kommt es daher auch anders als erwartet...

Das Buch war eine Empfehlung einer Erzieherin. Habe es zur Einschulung für meine Tochter bestellt.Meine Tochter findet das Buch super auch ich bin sehr zufrieden. Eine schöne Geschichte für die Schulanfänger. Eine klare Kaufempfehlung!!!

Cooles Buch und unser Schulanfänger liebt es sehr! Kommt spaßig rüber und genauso soll man sein Kind auch auf die Schule vorbereiten können! Spaß haben an der Sache, aber auch den "Ernst des Leben" kennenlernen

Diese Bilderbuch finde ich als Pädagogin sehr nett. Meine eigene Tochter und auch meine Kindergartenkinder fanden es entzückend. Sehr empfehlenswert! Top!

Eine niedliche Geschichte für den Start in die 1. Klasse (für Eltern und für Lehrer!).Diese Größe eignet sich gut, um es der Klasse vorzulesen und die Bilder zu zeigen.

Die neuen Illustrationen von Antje Drescher sind heller und sehen freundlicher aus. Das Monster ist allerdings noch grusseliger. Die Buchgröße war zum Zeigen der Bilder für Kinder gut geeignet.

allerdings finde ich die alte, Version perfekt - ich weiß nicht, warum es immer für alles neue und farbenfreundlichere, aktuellere Versionen geben muss.

Es ist das beste Kochbuch für die feine kulinarische Küche. Herr Wohlfahrt weiß einfach wie man richtig kocht. Ich hoffe mir hilft dieses Buch für den Weg zum Sternekoch. Dadurch dass ich jetzt meine Ausbildung fertig gemacht habe.

Nun kehrt er mit einem neuen Projekt zurück in die Öffentlichkeit: 35 seiner legendärsten Rezepte versammelt in einem Buch. (Quelle: Verlag)Meine Meinung:Diese Meisterwerk ist aufgeteilt in die Kategorien:- Einleitung und Interview- Amuse-Bouche und Vorspeisen- Fisch, Krustentiere, Risotto- Fleisch, Geflügel, Innereien und Wild- Käse und DessertsDas Interview am Anfang war hochinteressant zu lesen und man bekommt viele persönliche Einblicke von Harald Wohlfahrt. Ein sehr sympathischer und bodenständig gebliebener, perfektionistischer Mensch. Die Rezepte sind kreativ und höchst anspruchsvoll. Seien es die Terrine von Lachs und St. Jakobsmuscheln, die Trilogie vom schottischen Lachs, Arborio-Risotto mit Spitzmorcheln und jungen Erbsen, das Limousin-Lamm mit Auberginen und Couscous oder das Souffle von schwarzer und weißer Schokolade. Die Gerichte sind sehr übersichtlich gestaltet, verständlich dargestellt und mit großartigen Bilder in Szene gesetzt. Man sieht die Perfektion auf jeder Seite, das zeigt sich natürlich auch in der Beschreibung der Zubereitung der Gerichte. Akkurates und sauberes Arbeiten ist hier vonnöten, genauso wie hochwertige Zutaten. Was sich ja eigentlich von selbst versteht. Denn hier stehen das Produkt und der Geschmack im Mittelpunkt. Man sollte schon einiges an Geschick in der Küche mitbringen, wenn man sich hier an das Nachkochen wagen will. Aber die Mühe wird belohnt. Ich bin ja ganz begeistert von den großartigen Saucen, die sind einfach ein Gedicht. Und die getrockneten Tomaten gelingen sowie das Auberginentatar haben wir schon unseren Gästen vorgesetzt und wahre Begeisterungsstürme geerntet.Cover:Ein tolles und sehr ansprechendes Bild des Meisterkochs.Fazit:Ein beeindruckendes Kochbuch in hochwertiger Gestaltung, das einfach in jede Küche gehört. Kleine Persönliche Geschichten, sehr gute, ehrliche Fotos... ein Spaß darin zu blättern. Die Zusammenstellung der Musiker, die portraitiert werden, ist natürlich immer subjektiv, hier quasi nur aus dem anglo-amerikanischen Raum, aber mir gefällt, dass sie genreübergreifend ist und sich neben R&B, Rock und Metal auch der Minimalist Philip Glass finden lässt.

Andrew Zuckermann (1977 in Washington DC geboren) und Alex Vlack (1974 on New York geboren) porträtieren in diesem Buch 52 Musiker aus verschiedenen Genres. Von jedem Musiker finden sich ein bis zwei Close-up Aufnahmen in "Musik", bei denen Falten nicht retuschiert wurden. Jeder von ihnen wird mit einem besonders prägnanten Satz in großer Schrift vorgestellt und auf der nächsten Seite folgt dann ein seitenfüllender Text. Am Ende des Buches findet sich Mini-Biographien der 52 Künstler.Während die Fotos über jeden Zweifel erhaben sind, hätte ich mir von den Texten eine andere Buchstabengröße gewünscht. So wirken die Wörter etwas zu klein, sind aber trotzdem gut zu lesen. Die Auswahl der Musiker hätte wahrscheinlich jeder Leser ganz anders getroffen. Adele, Marina & the Diamonds, Neil Young wären meine Favoriten gewesen. US-Künstler dominieren die von Zuckerman getroffene Auswahl. Und es geht auch wirklich um Musik und nicht um besonders auffällige Shows und tolles Aussehen, wäre trotzdem verkaufsfördernd gewesen Britney Spears und ähnliche Stars in die Auswahl aufzunehmen. Stattdessen gibt es viele graue Herren zu sehen, wie Mark Knopfler, Kenny Rogers und Burt Bacharach. Und was mich besonders freut immerhin 50 % von CSNY, nämlich die Herren Crosby und Nash. David Crosby räumt ein sich zu lange in seiner destruktiven Sucht verloren zu haben und nennt die Aufgabe weiterhin Songs zu schreiben und somit noch eine Aufgabe i Leben zu haben als einen Grund um sein Leben wieder geordnet zu haben. Fiona Apple, Welten von Britney Spears Ruhm und Make-up Verbrauch entfernt, dafür in Sachen Glaubwürdigkeit und Tiefe hoffnungslos überlegen, beeindruckt mit ungeschminkter Schönheit und Würde. Sie erzählt davon, dass die das Publikum ignorieren muss, um bessere Leistung zu bringen und das Musik für sie etwas "abführendes" sei. First of all I would like to put a focus on the general appearance - unlike many other ebooks this digital edition displays passages containing source code or graphics clearly, with a good contrast and excellent readability. Good layout job by O'Reilly.Lex and yacc are powerful tools for software engineers, providing efficient ways for parsing source code (and lyric works, if you write any...)On the other hand, versatility goes along with complexity. Doug Brown understands how to systematically dissect the field into consecutive steps, each accompanied by well chosen examples, leading the reader safely through the jungle of regular expressions, EBNF, symbol tables, grammars and tokens. This book is a good refresher for experienced software developers but a beginner should be aware that the study of the art of compiler construction is inevitable to fully deploy the massive amount of knowledge packed up in this book. Surely not a bedside reading, as you feel the urge to hack in the lines of the examples and see what they do. Considering the mature state of both tools I was not sure if this edition was a good choice - now I am glad to own it.

This was my first O'Reilly book, and one I've used ever since as a yardstick of what they're capable of producing.Faced with the daunting task of writing a compiler, I discovered this book and was amazed at the wealth and depth of information it contains.It could possibly do with a little extra theoretical background, but if you are looking at any sort of task involving lex and yacc or their derivatives, buy this excellent book.

This book will get you writing language compilers in Lex and Yacc. It is clearly written, to the point, and has a wealth of useful information.It should be supplemented with a more theoretical work, like Aho, Sethi and Ullman's book on compilers.

This is a nice introduction for anyone who wants to start working with lex and yacc. What it explains, it explains well.Unfortunately, there is much it does not explain at all. For example, how do I process conditional statements, how do I deal with functions and procedures, how do I incorporate classes in my language.The book needs a second volume which picks up where this one ends.

This book, along with the Dragon Book, forms the required reading for anyone interested in compilers and language processing. I was quite impressed by the clarity of the examples, and the breadth of the different lex and yacc implementations that it covers. If you need to do complex parsing or language design, definitely pick up a copy of this.

I needed to build a rather complex scanner for an HTML code-generator and (on a separate project) a mib parsing tool. This book got me up and running within a week or so. The examples are useful and the authors cover many of the different "flavors" of these tools (i.e. flex, bison, etc.) I highly recommend it.

This is fairly complex subject. Consider the following:1. Lex is quite useless. 2. Yacc is good but any bug is be VERY hard to fix and can potentialy destroy your project. 3. The book does not touch on some practical advice that can make or break a parser/lexer. 4. Unsuccesful error recovery can break your project.My recommendation: Don't invest ANY time on Lex & Yacc, learn to write a parser/lexer by hand and you WILL be better off.

Ich habe übersehen das das Buch (gut versteckt) in der Bestellung nur als Kindl (elektronisch) verkauft wird.

Scott Gummer's book is really more a history of "The Golfing Machine" than it is a biography of Homer Kelley, author of TGM. In fact, Homer's bio and the 30 year history of his research and writing of TGM only comprise about 1/3 of the book, the rest is devoted to his efforts to promote his weird and wonderful golf masterpiece, with extended bios of Ben Doyle and Bobby Clampett, and appearances by the usual TGM cast of characters including Tom Tomasello, Mac O'Grady, Brian Manzella, Lynn Blake and others. It's an easy two-evening read and highly recommended for golf nuts, especially for anyone who's ever tried to read The Golfing Machine and wondered at its strangeness and complexity.

Great read for those who have a burning passion regarding history of golf science and its application to golf teaching. The connections made between a lone eccentric (Homer Kelly) who fashioned this science and its adoption among professional players and teachers who followed is fascinating. Even more interesting is that one can go to youtube.com and see these principles taught by those involved with promoting and incorporating it as a most valuable science. I was particularly taken with the science of the two main hinges of the golf swing. Always wondered why good players were looking back at their backswing position and down at their hand position at contact. What were they looking for? You'll find the history of these developments in the book, but you'll need to go to youtube to understand the importance of these findings as applied to actual swing mechanics.

The book is what it says, but it is not the Golfing Machine. It is about Homer Kelley creating the Golfing Machine. If you want the Golfing Machine buy THAT book. If you want to read about how it was created, read this one.

This isn't the details of Kelley's "golf machine", but it is about what he went through to figure out the nuances of the golf swing. There are tidbits/glimpses of some of the details of his findings, but they are not the focus of this book. Perhaps that is just as well, because, based on what was written here, I probably would not have understood much of the language of geometry and physics that are the basis for his book itself.

This book is a companion book to Omar Kelley's unorthodox book...The Golfing Machine". If you liked that one, you'll appreciate this one. It takes the reader through the difficult stages of development of Omar's journey to produce the book and how it affected others when it was written. A very good read.
